On Sunday, September 20, 2026, the Filipino Catholic Community in Vienna came together in prayer and thanksgiving at the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy, where music became a powerful expression of faith, unity and devotion.
At the heart of the celebration was the Filipino Catholic Community Joint Choir, whose members from different Filipino Catholic choirs joined their voices to provide the musical accompaniment for the Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia and the Thanksgiving Holy Mass of Bishop Cyril “Jojo” Villareal.
Hundreds of faithful gathered for the celebration, filling the church with prayer and song. Throughout the Holy Mass, the Joint Choir’s music helped create an atmosphere of reverence and celebration, accompanying the congregation as it prayed, reflected and gave thanks.
Many choirs, one voice
The Joint Choir brought together singers from six participating Filipino Catholic choirs in Vienna:
- CHANCEL
- CFC
- OLOM
- OLPS
- OLS
- FCC Choir
Although each choir has its own identity, musical tradition and community, the joint celebration demonstrated what can happen when these groups come together with a common purpose: to serve the Filipino Catholic community through music and worship.
Leading the large ensemble were three experienced conductresses: Ms. Thess Magno, Ms. Sonia Kison and Ms. Ophelia Magistrado. Their combined leadership helped bring together the different voices and musical experiences of the participating choirs into one harmonious ensemble.
The result was more than simply musical accompaniment. It became a reflection of the Filipino Catholic community itself — diverse in background and origin, yet united by faith, culture and devotion.
Music as an expression of devotion
For Filipino Catholics, music has always held a special place in religious celebrations. Songs of praise, Marian hymns and liturgical music often become deeply connected with personal memories, family traditions and community celebrations.
During the Peñafrancia celebration, this tradition was particularly meaningful. The Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, affectionately known among devotees as Ina, carries a profound spiritual and cultural significance for Filipinos, especially for devotees with roots in the Bicol Region.
Yet devotion to Ina reaches far beyond Bicol. Filipino Catholics from different regions of the Philippines and different backgrounds come together to honor Mary and celebrate their shared faith.
The Joint Choir reflected precisely this diversity.
A choir that brought the community together
The enthusiastic response of the congregation showed how much the faithful appreciated the choir’s service. The music did not merely accompany the different parts of the Mass; it helped the congregation participate more deeply in the liturgy.
As the voices of the singers blended together, the distinction between individual choirs seemed to disappear. What emerged was one collective voice — a Filipino Catholic voice in Vienna.
The performance was also a reminder that community choirs play an important role in the life of the Filipino Catholic community abroad. Beyond rehearsals and performances, choir members dedicate their time and talents to serving the Church and helping fellow Filipinos feel connected to their faith and cultural heritage.
Faith beyond borders
The celebration on September 20 was therefore not only a musical gathering. It was a celebration of faith, thanksgiving, community and Filipino identity.
The Filipino Catholic Community Joint Choir showed how music can cross regional and organizational boundaries and bring people together. Six choirs, guided by three conductresses and united by a common mission, transformed their individual voices into one prayerful offering.
As hundreds of faithful joined in the celebration, the message was clear: when Filipino Catholics come together in faith, their voices become stronger — and their music becomes a shared expression of devotion.
For the Filipino Catholic community in Vienna, the Joint Choir’s service at the Peñafrancia Feast and Thanksgiving Mass will remain a beautiful example of unity in diversity and faith expressed through music.
